This commission was a pleasure, because my friends Hans and Margo came to my studio and dug through big piles of scraps, selecting brilliant and unexpected fabrics for their custom duvet cover. I loved the wild fabrics they chose. They wanted a spiral, surrounded by tilting borders, two of my favourite improvisational patchwork techniques.
Center of Spiral starts with a two inch star-burst circle. The seemingly strange fabric choices work together to create a vivid and exciting design.
Each “arm” of the spiral is composed of numerous patchwork scraps, added one by one to gradually enlarge the spiral.
The patchwork design is sewn to a backing fabric, for strength and longevity.
Custom orders: If you are interested in commissioning something similar, please get in touch. Your spiral quilt or duvet cover will not be the same as this one, as different fabrics would be used, in the colours of your choice. Can you imagine a spiral quilt in shades of blue and green? Or a duvet cover in the yellows, browns, and oranges of autumn?
