OUR QUILT!©
This quilt is a
group effort centered around the November 20, 2004 Municipality
Incorporation Referendum for Gabriola Island.
The theme is" Vote No- Vote Rural".
Individual
Squares (with some of the quilters’ comments):
1. Top left, "Chanterelles" by Don Smardon
and Vivien Johnson: vote rural to save trees, for
birds, animals, people and MUSHROOMS!
2. Center, "Community" by Jean MacLaren: to
me community is what makes Gabriola a great place to
live. Keeping wild places is important so we have
reason to dance!
3.
Top right, "Vote no, No, NO" by Mary Dodds:
I love Gabriola as it is. I like the trees, flowers
and hearing the birds sing, that is why we like
Gabriola. I hope we can keep it that way.
4.
Middle left, "Sunrise" by Mary Olsen: the
rooster always crows at sunrise. When I first moved to
Gabriola I heard the sound of the rooster in the
morning and the sea lions. I miss those sounds.
5.
Center, "M-U-N-I-C-I-P-A-L-I-T-Y" by Kristin
Millar: I think mine is self-explanatory.
6. Middle right, "Vote Rural with Carrots"
by Jennifer Nash.
7. Middle lower left, "Vote Rural with
Rainbow" by Hayden Harvey.
8. Middle lower right, "Someone’s Lion, Can We
Bear It?" by a group of fun-loving Gabriolans who
will be voting NO for this referendum.
9. Lower bottom left, "small is beautiful"
by Darlene Mace: Less than 2% of Gabriola is protected
greenspace. I would like to see the mandate of the
Islands Trust strengthened to promote the protection
and preservation of more green space.
10.
Bottom Center "Moo-re greenspace" by Mo
Olsen. The moo-re we honor our "green" space
the healthier we will be.
Rural Gabriola, moo-ve over city.
Green space for critters
Green space for agriculture
Green space for breathing, breathe-ing.
11. Lower bottom right, " Chanterelles" by
Vivien Johnson (see "chanterelles" by Don
Smardon).
