Hope Suspended
I started this quilt in early March, 2003, at a time when it seemed that
the peace rallies and the protests against war in
Iraq
might be effective.
As I sewed, the words "hope arising" were constantly in my
mind, and. I planned to call the quilt, "Hope Arising on the Brink
of War". I stopped sewing when war was declared, feeling very
disheartened.
Some days later, I bound
the edges and began quilting, but I left the basting threads, raveling
edges, and even the ominous-looking pins that held the bird's wings
in place. Leaving my quilt "unfinished" in this way seemed a
symbolic way to mirror the disruption and uncertainty that followed the
outbreak of war. Three years later, I call the quilt "Hope
Suspended".
