Details of Lonnie's Quilt

Detail of tree

Detail of foliage growing beneath tree

I created the tree and the foliage by machine-sewing tiny snippets of yarn, without gluing or stabilizing them first.

This allows the threads to move around as they are being sewn, which enhances the illusion of the plant as a living, growing, organism and results in a visually energetic 3-D embroidery.

Sewing this way is very satisfying but sometimes unnerving!

If this sounds like an intriguing way to sew, you might be interested in my Sculpted Landscape and Seascape Workshop
