Design Process for the Worry Birds
Cape
A scrap of batik fabric sparked the idea for Worry Birds, because I could
imagine it as a bird's eye and beak.
For the bodies of the birds I chose this blotchy black and white fabric
because it had a frenetic and unsettling quality.
Initially, I experimented with yarn to represent my feelings being
pecked and pulled at by the worry birds. |

Later, I used this vintage geometric fabric to
represent my wish for an orderly life and calm emotions, with the birds
tugging and pulling at the shredded ends. of the strips.
The gingham background fabric was chosen because it made my eyes jump
and waver, especially where seams met.
The polka dot fabrics also seemed vaguely unnerving, and the dots could
be seen as eggs. |

I fussed endlessly with the
placement of the birds, the details of the central design, and
with the shape of the background.
For quite a while, I saw this piece as an apron, not a
cape.
Oddly enough, I didn't worry about the asymmetry of the
piece. |
