The design process involved
in the Balance Cape

The cape started with this fabric collage, which I had made a year before in a Healing Stitches workshop, where I focused on my feelings about balance and imbalance in my life, my work, and my emotions.

Once I was embarked upon the Inside the Dress Project, and was working on the prescribed exercises,
I realized that I wanted to explore this theme more deeply.

The three photos below show some of the design possibilities I considered for a pathway that would be symbolic of my uneasy equilibrium.

Each of the three capes in Capabilities evolved very slowly, with many changes, additions, and unexpected inspirations and frustrations.

Each step of the way, I tried out different design possibilities, pinning them to the wall, then stepping  back to see how I felt about them.

Many choices were made fortuitously. For example, the shape of the hem at the bottom was suggested by the odd shape of the white fabric scrap I used.
