The Balance Cape is one of three pieces in the Capabilities installation, part of the Inside the Dress Project.

The design  of the cape evolved very slowly.

Click to see some of the design possibilities

The Balance Cape is lined with red satin, which is heavily sculpted and embossed by the quilting stitches which outline the motifs on the front of the cape.

The cape is hung on a "coat-hanger" made of stranded copper wire formed into the shape of head and breasts.

Flexible plastic tubing is sewn inside the bottom hem, to help maintain its contours.

     Balance Cape

Balance is a verb, not a noun.
It is something I must do.

Like a gyroscope, I spin and wobble,
seeking the stillness at the center of motion.

Where I am heading is where I need to go.

Suspended from the ceiling, the shape of the cape changes as it slowly rotates.. In this photo, it is seen somewhat in side view..
